Bio:
Venus came from a northern village that prides itself on it's prophecy talents. Everyone within the village has the skill to some degree, including Venus's parents who are the best prophets within the village. Venus however, has not seemed to inherit her parents' gift and was therefore abandoned by the village head for being "useless". Now exiled from her home, Venus can never return to see her family or friends for fear of being killed on sight. She was found by Gray and Kaylee, who took her back to their home and have welcomed her to stay with them. Venus has sleep paralysis, potentially from the prophecy gift that the other viscets in her village have, or from the abuse she encountered as a child for not having the gift. This however means that she often gets trapped in her nightmares and can panic over them. Gray has some experience with this and so he helps her figure out tricks to make it easier for her to escape. |

Venus followed the viscet quietly through the town, gazing at the abandoned buildings around them. They stopped for a moment and the young viscling almost ran into them, quickly bowing her head in an apology. They made a scoff sound and then turned back to where they were headed. Venus knew she was a disappointment to them, a talentless viscet born from two of the best prophets her village had, but she had no idea why the village head had demanded she come with him on this excursion. There was nothing here, not even an actual village anymore. The wind picked up and Venus shivered against the cold, wishing she had been allowed to grab a parka or jacket before leaving the village.
The village head noticed movement in the buildings and frowned as this place was supposed to be abandoned. A small sled led by a viscet male slid by, obviously just passing through the old village to get to the next settlement. The village head waited for them to be out of sight and then opened the door to one of the buildings, motioning for Venus to go inside. She stepped into the building and frowned as it was barely standing.
“Village head, what are we doing here?” She asked and he walked into the front room, ignoring her.
She followed and saw him sit down to smoke a pipe, “Lay down girl. This is your last chance.”
Venus looked at him, “My last chance?” Venus sat on the only other thing in the room, a table that had clearly seen better days.
“Yes. Either you see a prophecy or this is where you will remain as an outcast.” The village head took a deep breath of the pipe in and exhaled the plume of smoke, “If you fail, you are forever an exile to our village. If you tried to return, you would be killed on sight.”
Venus looked at the village head in shock and felt tears welling up in her eyes. Exiled. She would never see her parents again. Her siblings. Everyone would be gone.
She laid down and closed her eyes, trying to do exactly what her parents had taught her, yet nothing happened. Maybe she truly was talentless. She tried for hours, in the bitter cold of that building, but all she got was a headache from the mental strain. She opened her eyes, feeling the tears frozen on her cheek and looked over to the village head. He frowned and shook his head before standing.
“You may never come home.” He growled at her before leaving the building.
Venus had no strength to get up and go after him, and she knew it would be no use. All she could do was lay there on that table and let the exhaustion consume her. She didn’t even realize she was asleep until her nightmare began.
Venus found herself trapped in her nightmare, whimpering and shaking in the cold as the building around her shook. She didn’t even realize that there was a reason the build shook, or that she was in danger, all she knew was that she was absolutely terrified and unable to move. She couldn’t make any sound more than a soft cry of fear, but that cry was enough to catch the attention of someone outside.
Venus could hear the person running through the building, hearing the floorboards creak under their feet and a voice outside yelling, “KAYLEE! KAYLEE! GET BACK HERE! IT ISN’T SAFE!”
Venus still couldn’t move. All she could do was stare at the ceiling in blank horror as a viscet her age approached the bed. They shook her gently and looked at her worried, “Come on, get up. You have to get out of here.”
But Venus couldn’t move. The viscet ran to the doorway, “There is someone in here Gray! I don’t think they can move!”
She started to realize what was happening. The room was dark but not because it was night, but because there was a blizzard. The high winds were shaking the building and Venus now noticed the chips of plaster falling around her as the building began to give way to the winds.
A new viscet appeared in her sight and lifted her gently, “It’s alright. We will get you out of here.”
She was still stuck in her nightmare, but this male made her feel safe. She allowed herself to relax in his arms as he carried her out of the building and into the storm. Once out of the building, she was blinded by the snow, but at least that was better than her nightmare.
She could feel herself being placed in a sled and the motion of it being pulled across the snow. She had a vague feeling that there was another viscet right behind her, either on the sled too or walking directly behind it, maybe pushing it. The main force of the sled movement came from the front however, either someone or a team of dogs was pulling the sled. There was no sound beside the deafening roar of the wind and Venus wondered where they were going. As she started to fully wake up, she realized that someone had drapped a parka over her to keep her warm in the blizzard. She moved it further up on her slightly to hide her face in the hood. They kept going further, much further than anywhere within town, and Venus truly wondered where it was they were heading. The nearest town was a 3 day sled trip away, they couldn’t possibly be going that far in this storm.
Her answer came in a sudden clear in the storm. She could see again. The sled had been pulled into an ice cave and she now saw the male viscet was the one pulling the sled and the viscet her age, Kaylee, was the one pushing it. The male viscet caught his breath after a moment and then waved his hand at the opening of the cave. Venus gasped softly as the ice merged together to form a blockade from the storm. She noticed that a small crevice was left open along the side incase they needed to get out.
The male was about to pick her up out of the sled when she sat up on her own. He jumped a bit startled and then laughed a bit, “Oh, you scared me. You alright?”
She nodded and he smiled, “That’s good. Can you get up?”
Venus nodded again before pulling herself to her feet. The male smiled and nodded towards the girl Kaylee, “Kaylee here can show you around if you like. I apologize for taking you out of town but I was trying to get out of this storm. Should I send word to someone that you are alright?”
He asked the question but didn’t need a response as her face said it all, there was noone. He nodded a bit, ushering her off into the cave, “Very well. You can stay here as long as you like!”
Venus looked at the male a bit confused and then followed Kaylee into the cave system. It was much brighter than Venus imagined it would be in the cave, almost like the ice was glowing around her. She followed Kaylee to a cavern that was blocked off with a decorative blanket.
Kaylee slid it to the side and smiled at Venus, “Come on in. It’s not much but I think it looks nice.”
Venus stepped into a simple bedroom that had a mattress laying on a slab of ice, piled high with blankets and pillows. There was a desk made out of ice and stone and shelves of stone filled with books attached to the walls. Kaylee flopped onto the bed and smiled at Venus.
“So, I never got your name.” Kaylee spoke, arranging the pillows so that Venus could sit too.
“Oh. My name is Venus. Like the planet.” She blushed a bit and Kaylee smiled.
“That’s a really pretty name. Well for tonight you can have my bed. I can set up a spot of the ground with my pillows. Gray will probably go into town and get you a mattress of your own tomorrow if you would like to stay.” Kaylee spoke and Venus looked at her.
“You mean I could live here?” Venus had never felt so welcome before in her life.
Kaylee nodded, “Of course you can! You are always welcome here!”
Venus looked at the girl, “But what if I am useless to you guys?”
Kaylee was confused, “Useless? No one is useless.”
Venus had never thought of talentless people having use in her old village. She couldn’t have known that people thought differently outside of it. A bit of hope filled her, perhaps she would find this to be a suitable place to stay for a while.
Venus and Kaylee spent the rest of that day talking, with Kaylee doing the most of the talking. She spoke about Gray, and his talents with ice, and about how he had found her. She talked about the constellations and how she helped Gray study them, for what she had no idea. Venus enjoyed listening to her talk, and Kaylee didn’t press for information about Venus, which she appreciated.
The two girls didn’t even realize it was getting late until Gray came with some bowls of stew, “I brought you two dinner as I didn’t think you would stop gossiping enough to come get some.”
He stepped into the room and handed each girl a bowl of soup. Venus looked up at him, “Thank you Mister. I really appreciate you helping me out like this.”
“Feel free to call me Gray. What can I call you?” He asked and Venus blushed realizing she had only told Kaylee her name.
“Venus, like the planet.” She said and Gray nodded.
“That’s a very nice name. Now I am sure Kaylee has made it clear you are welcome to stay as long as you like?” Gray asked and Venus nodded, “Good. If you want to stay, I can run into town and grab a mattress of your own tomorrow. For now, I am sure Kaylee and you can figure something out?”
Kaylee nodded and then jokes, “Why don’t we give her your bed?” Kaylee stuck a tongue out at Gray who chuckled.
“Unlike most viscets, I don’t mind sleeping on ice. So I hardly think my bed would be very comfortable for her.” Gray ruffled Kaylee’s mane and stepped out of the room, “You two have a good night. Kaylee you know where to put the bowls when you are done. Good night.”
Kaylee nodded and sat with Venus as they ate. Once the bowls were cleared, they set to work splitting the blankets and pillows in half and setting up a sleeping area for Kaylee next to the bed. Venus fell asleep quickly in the blankets, and the dreams started out normal, but soon her mind went to her exile and things went dark. She tried to wake up but she couldn’t, even when she opened her eyes, the nightmare continued. Her whimper woke Kaylee, who climbed into the bed to see what was wrong.
“Venus? Are you alright? Venus?” Kaylee tried to shake Venus awake and got scared when she remained petrified and motionless. Kaylee got up and fled out of the room, only to return a few moments later with Gray.
He knelt next to the bed and gently touched the girl’s shoulders, “Venus? You ok? Can you move?” He waited but soon realized the problem. “Hey, Venus. Listen to me. I know this is scary and that you just want it to be over. I know how scared you must be but you need to do what I say, alright? It will make it go away. Picture a big white dragon, and have that dragon block out whatever dreams you are having. Just keep picturing that dragon until everything else is gone, eaten or blocked out by that dragon. Alright? Now try and let yourself relax. The dragon is protecting you, you are alright.”
Gray walked her through it, his voice calm and kind as he slowly guided Venus through the episode. When she finally woke up, she couldn’t help but let the tears start flowing from her eyes. She hugged him tightly and he scooped her up, “Come on girls, lets go sit by the fire and I’ll make some hot chocolate.”
He carried the crying and shaking Venus into the sitting room, and settled her into a plush chair. He wrapped her in a blanket before starting up the fire and vanishing into the kitchen. Kaylee sat down in a chair next to her new friend and looked at her worried, “Are you ok?”
Venus nodded a bit and looked at Kaylee, “I get stuck in my dreams sometimes. Mostly just my nightmares.”
Kaylee frowned, “That sounds really scary.”
Venus nodded more but felt a completely different attitude from Kaylee and Gray towards it than she did with her village before. In her village it was seen as an inconvenience and trouble, whereas here, they actually really seemed to care and actually help her with it. Even now, in the middle of the night, they chose to sit up by the fire with hot cocoa instead of climbing back into their nice cozy beds. Gray handed her a cup and she could see the concern in his eyes.
“How you feeling?” He asked, looking down at her eyes.
“I’m feeling better. Thank you Gray.” She spoke quietly and he nodded, sitting in a chair of his own. The trio sat there, talking quietly and sipping their hot chocolate as the terrifying dream became a forgotten piece of the night.
