The underworld is controlled by Hades and is where the souls go after they die. Based off Greek Mythology, this underworld system works very similarly to that one where most souls go to the Asphodel Meadows to wander aimlessly. Some souls go to the Mourning Fields where they have wasted their lives on unrequited love. Elysium is where the souls of those who have done well in life are able to live with no difficulties, it is also where those in the role of Hades can retire to after they relinquish their title onto another. The current Hades has no plan to do this in the near future and probably never will just because of the type of person he is. The isles of the blessed are for those who have been reborn three times and all three times have gained access to Elysium, so for those who are truly good. Tartarus is where the souls of those who deserve to be punished go, and the current Hades sends those who are cruel and merciless to innocent lives there. He doesn't do it very often as Tartarus is a truly awful part of the underworld but he is also not one to hesitate if he believe you have been that bad in your life.
The various rivers loop around the Underworld and each one has a specific name and dangerous quality to it.
The River Styx is known as the major river that Charon sails in and also as the River of Hatred. It's water will burn you with the hatred of souls trapped within it. The only viscet this river does not effect is Charon as Hades had promised he would never feel the burning of hate after being caught in a fire set by hate.
The River Acheron is the river of pain and is another river that Charon typically sails over. In this case, the River Acheron splits from the River Styx and flows under the castle through a series of tunnels and then on past the Mourning Fields to rejoin the Styx along with the River Cocytus.
The River Cocytus is the river of wailing and splits from the River Styx to pass right through the center of the Mourning Fields.
The River Lethe circles Elysium and The isles of the Blessed and is known as the river of forgetfulness. It is said that if you touch it's waters you will forget the life you had before you died. Some souls choose to swim in it's waters to forget their painful life and to make a brand new life in the underworld.
The River Phegethon is known at the river of fire and is more like lava than water. This river branches off the Lethe and leads straight to the depths of Tartarus.
Oceanus is the river that circles the whole of the underworld and keeps it seperate from the mortal realm. The only access into the Underworld is through the opening guarded by Cerebus and Charon. To officially gain access to the Underworld, souls are supposed to bring a coin to pay off the Ferryman, but Charon does not hold it against souls if they do not have a coin, rather those souls are brought to the castle to be judged directly.
The opening to the underworld looks like an ordinary cave system to the mortal realm but if you are able to find your way through the maze, you will reach a blank wall with a scythe engraved along the edge. By asking to see Hades, you can open this section of wall and enter the entrance to the underworld. From here, you are met by Charon and Cerberus who will determine if you are worthy enough to enter or ferry you to where you need to go.

Underworld Demons/Creatures
Cerberus
Cerberus is the three headed dog that guards the entrance to the underworld alongside Charon. He rarely leaves the underworld for this reason but will be called out for missions if required. He can also call Hades back to the Underworld through the shadows if Hades is injured or if there is an emergency.
Cerberus is actually well mannered for the fact that he is a demon and Hades often refers to him as a normal dog. Cerberus however will attack and kill anyone who he feels is a threat to the underworld and so he is the one of the tasks for those who wish to meet with Hades. If he feels they are pure of heart and not a threat, he will let them pass, however if he even feels a slight threat, he will attack. He has his own cave cut into the stone walls where he lives but often times he just sleeps next to the river. There is no way to enter the underworld without encountering him and even if you try to slip past, he may just toss you into the River Styx. |
HellHounds
The Hellhounds are the hounds that Hades can set on the trail of various demons when they need to be tracked and hunted down. The Hellhounds are bloodthirsty and will track down their target no matter the distance or obstacles in their way.
Described as dogs with the fire of tartarus within them, they are incredibly fast and ferocious when they are given a command. They can melt through all chains except those made from the black metal of Hades and if they are loose without a purpose, can cause extreme damage. When they are not hunting down prey, they patrol the underworld for demons escaped from tartarus and live within the boneyards when not working. When given a chain collar of the black metal, they are under control and less destructive so they also will guard the castle, but these will typically resemble mortal dogs in a doberman like look. |
Orthrus
Orthrus is the brother of Cerberus and mainly lives deep inside the underworld, near the castle. There he guards the castle against intruders and will aid in defending the entrance if needed.
Orthrus is also tasked with guarding Aiakos during fights and will come to his aid if he is in danger. While Cerebus can summon Hades, Orthrus can be summoned to Aiakos if required. He isn't as powerful as Cerberus but typically is strong enough for even tough demons. He is more feral in appearance than Cerberus but is actually well mannered just like his brother when not fighting. He can take the shape of a normal shepherd like dog in the mortal realm if needed but rarely does. |
The Underworld Dragons
These Dragons are the spirits of the rivers in the underworld, each with their own personality and specialty. They control the flow of the rivers and live either in the waters or right along their banks. They are under Hades's control but very rarely leave the underworld as their rivers would begin to dry up if they were gone too long. They are extremely powerful beings but usually keep to themselves.
Manticore
The manticore is a large lion hybrid creatures that patrols the underworld from the air. It follows the order of Hades but rarely leaves the underworld due to it's dangerous nature. It has been known to swoop down on intruders and carry them over to the river of styx where they burn in it's waters.
It also has a scorpion tail that carries venom deadly enough to kill a viscet within moments. Those who fall prey to the Manticore are left in the boneyard of souls where it lives when not patrolling. It lives in the massive skull of a demon whose has been in the graveyard for centuries so no one knows exactly what the demon had been. |
Catoblepas
An demon that resembles a buffalo with it's head pointing down due to the weight. The breath of the creature can turn people into stone and it is unaffected by the rivers of the Styx due to its armored skin. They are considered pets of the gorgons, however Hades has a small herd of them that he cares for in the underworld. They are not really used for defense as much as Hades just lets them roam the fields.

Amphisbaena
A creature of Tartarus, this serpent patrols tartarus looking for a way to escape. Aiakos came into contact with it on his search for a demon companion and learned just how dangerous they are.
Typically they are very cunning, but will fight between heads for control of the body. Sometimes they will be the same color or two different colors split evenly down the body. Hades has only ever had one under his control and that was under an emergency. |
