Bio:
Tyto was born as a barn owl, but as a small fledgling, a group of scientists collected her. They ran many experiments on her, and the other animals they collected, to try and create a viscet- animal hybrid. She was the only successful trial and as such she can shift between the two forms. The shifting is however very painful for her and so she spends much of her time in her viscet form, rarely shifting if she does at all. She was rescued from the lab by Newt and Hades, who brought her back to the House of Angels to care for her. Hades named her Tyto after the barn owl companion of one of his friends. Newt has been in charge of caring for her, as he can communicate easiest with her due to her lack of verbal skills. He has taught her through her time at the house of angels how to speak and communicate with others but she still struggles at times. She prefers to stay around him whenever she can and helps him take care of the raptors that come into his care. |

Stories
Finding Tyto
Newt came into a clearing of buildings and heard animal cries from the closest set. He crept around the edge and found a cluster of cages bunched together off to the side of the main building. He moved closer and saw a sign on the building, “Ambrose Labs” and could now hear the animals crying in pain. He moved to the closest cage and found a small fox curled up in the bottom. It lifted it’s head and whimpered at him, showing it was almost completely blind. Newt cringed at the pained voice it sent to his mind and backed away a bit, bumping into the cage behind him. This one held a raven that could no longer fly. He looked at all the cages and all he could hear was the animals calling for him to help them. He grabbed a page off the raven’s cage and saw it was an information sheet.

He dropped the paper and looked back at the fox, finding it’s paper and reading it.

He looked at the dozens of cages and felt frustrated by the cruelty these animals had been through. He walked through them and then noticed a slightly larger figure in one of them. He moved towards it and was shocked to see a young viscling in the cage. He grabbed the bars and looked at her, “Hey, are you ok?”
She looked up at him terrified and backed away from him. He shook his head, “it’s alright, I won’t hurt you.”
She opened her mouth and made a semi clicking sound at him. He looked at her surprised and then saw her own page. He grabbed it and read it.

Newt growled a bit and looked at this young girl, now seeing the similarities between her and a Barn Owl. He put a paw through the bars and held it out to her, “It’s alright. You can take it.”
She moved towards his hand wearily and examined it nervously. He smiled and remained completely still so he didn’t spook her. She nudged his hand slightly and he was reminded of the wild birds that he would hand feed in the woods when he was not much older than her. He kept motionless and she became more comfortable around him, examining his hand, arm and then looking at him through the bars.
“See, I’m ok. My name is Newt.” Newt spoke and first the first time he felt her reach out to communicate with him.
Rather than the normal voice he heard of the animals, hers was very viscet in nature, “Newd?”
He chuckled softly and shook his head, “Newt. Like the salamander?”
As he spoke, he brought a salamander to mind and she seemed to understand, “Newt…”
He nodded and carefully closed his paw around hers, carefully not to scare her, “I am going to get you out of here, alright?”
She looked at the other cages, “Others too?”
He nodded, “All of the others too, don’t worry. I promise I won’t leave any behind.”
She seemed to relax a bit but then tensed up and looked towards the building. Newt looked up as well and saw guards bringing a scientist down. The girl let go of his hand and looked at him, “Run.”
He slipped away from her cage and carefully made his way through the cages, trying not to be seen. He almost got to the woods when one of the guards spotted him and yelled for him to stop. He took off into the woods and hid against a tree as the guards looked for him, “Sorry sir. We seem to have lost him.”
“Check all the subjects! Make sure he wasn’t interfering! And I want guards out here round the clock now. Shoot on sight.”
Newt growled and watched the guards move back to the cages. He waited until night and watched as guards moved through the cluster of cages, too vigilant for him to sneak in. Newt slipped back into the woods and thought for a moment. He was going to need help with this.
He ran back into the woods, and right past the House of Angels, heading to the cave entrance of the Underworld. He chirped at the bats roosting in the cave ceiling and held a hand out for one. He removed one of his earrings and held it out to the bat, “Please bring this to Hades for me.”
The bat chirped and then flew into the cave. Newt sat against the cave wall, figuring he might as well get some rest while he waited for Hades. He had only closed his eyes for a short time when he heard footsteps coming down the cave entrance, “Hey kid. I didn’t expect to be hearing from you. Are you alright?”
Hades handed him his earring and he slipped it back on, “Yessir. I am alright. I just need your help with something if you don’t mind.”
Newt flattened his ears back and Hades chuckled a bit, “Of course kid, that’s what I am here for. What’s going on?”
“I found a lab that is experimenting on animals. I think they are trying to make a viscet-animal hybrid that can freely shift between the forms. Most of the animals are lab failures and horribly disfigured or injured from the experiments. But I found one that was a success. She is a Barn Owl and when I saw her, she was in the form of a little girl…”
Hades looked at Newt curiously, “You are saying that they have actually made a shifting viscet? And it is a little girl?” Newt nodded and Hades shook his head disgusted, “Mortals are monsters aren’t they….” Hades rubbed his head and then motioned for Newt, “Well let’s go get them out.”
Newt nodded and led Hades through the woods towards the lab. As they walked further, Hades looked at Newt, “What were you doing this far from the gardens anyways?”
Newt looked at him, “Oh. The animals were telling me about a dangerous place over here. A place of death for animals. So of course I had to come look.”
Hades rolled his eyes and ruffled the boys hair a bit, “Of course you did.”
Newt chuckled and then nodded up ahead, “There it is. They have guards at the cages round the clock now cause they saw me earlier.”
Hades nodded, examining the building before looking at the cages, “Those the animals there?” Newt nodded, “Alright, I will handle the guards but I want you to get the animals out alright? You said many of them are injured right? Use this to help carry them…”
Hades summoned the shadows together to make a small sled that Newt could pull with the animals on it. He smiled and Hades moved towards the cages. The guards lifted their weapons and aimed at him, “Hold it right there! You can’t be here!”
Hades laughed and held up his hands, feigning that he was surprised, “Sorry. Didn’t realize I couldn’t walk here. Saw the path and figured this must be the way.”
The guards approached him and aimed their weapons at his chest, “Turn around and go back the way you came.”
Hades smirked, “Why would I do that?”
One of the guards lifted his gun to aim at Hades’s head, “Or else I’ll shoot you.”
Hades laughed again, “Have fun killing me…”
The guard looked at him surprised and his hands shook a bit, “What do you mean by that?”
Hades eyes suddenly glowed red, “Kinda hard to kill the God of Death.”
The guards stumbled back and Hades pulled his scythe from it’s marking, slicing right through the guns. The guards screamed and ran back to the building, tripping over each other as they tried to get away from Hades. Newt came up besides Hades and looked at him. Hades had a slight frown on his face, “Damn. That wasn’t too much fun, now was it?”
Newt chuckled a bit and Hades motioned for the cages, “You go ahead and get them out. Use this.”
Hades handed him a knife to cut through the mesh of the fencing and Newt approached the fox cage first. He cut a small opening in the fence and carefully lifted the fox out of the cage, soothing it as he asked it to stay on the sled. Hades moved through the cages as Newt worked and grinned as more guards came out of the building, “Look alive kid, we got some company.”
Hades lifted his scythe and watched the guards moving through the cages, “Looks like I am going to get my fun after all!” He swung the hilt of his scythe and struck the closest guard in the head. He dropped to the ground and Hades connected the side of his blade with another. He wasn’t trying to kill any of them but they didn't know that. Most of them panicked and dropped to the ground at just the sight of the scythe swinging towards them.
Newt kept cutting through the fences, gathering the animals up on the sled and then he even took the papers that were hanging on their fences. He stuffed them all into his journal and came to the final cage, the one with the barn owl viscet in it. He began to cut through the fence and looked at her curled up in the corner, “Hey, its ok. Can you come here? I am getting you out…”
She just kept chirping, “Danger. Danger. Danger.” in his mind and Newt frowned. She was shutting down with fear and he turned to find Hades. He was still holding off the guards and so Newt climbed into the cage and grabbed her arms.
She looked at him panicked and he soothed her, “Shhh. It’s ok. Come on. I’ve got you now.”
She slowly moved with him to the opening in the cage and was climbing out when a guard grabbed him, “Where are you going boy?”
The guard was knocked out by Hades who smiled at Newt, “Got everyone?” Newt nodded, helping the girl out of the cage and Hades nodded towards the woods, “you get going. I’ll hold them off a bit longer for you.”
Newt grabbed the sled and held the little girl’s hand as they took off for the woods, leaving Hades to stay behind to handle the last bit of the guards. Newt took the subjects deep in the woods and then slumped against a tree to rest for a moment. He sat there panting heavily and then examined all the animals on the sled, making sure they were all still doing well. As he looked at the little girl, she yelped and Hades appeared from the shadows.
“I’m sorry sweetie. Didn’t mean to startle you.” Hades spoke, looking at the young girl.
Newt rubbed her shoulders, “He is ok. Don’t worry. This is Hades, he rescued me when I was just about your age.”
The girl looked up at Hades and spoke in Newt’s mind, “Hades? Good?”
Newt nodded, “Yes. Hades is good. He helped me rescue you.”
Hades bent down and looked at the little girl, noticing scars on her arms from the experiments, “You poor thing. Come on, let’s get you back to the gardens.”
Newt went to grab the sled and Hades helped the little girl up onto his back to carry her. Newt looked at him as they walked, “I don’t think she has a name. What should we call her?”
Hades grinned a bit and looked at her, “Barn owl you said?” Newt nodded, “Well why not Tyto, Ty for short?”
Newt seemed surprised, “I didn’t know you knew the scientific name for Barn Owls.”
Hades chuckled a bit, “I know a girl with a barn owl companion and that’s his name. She told me all about them. I haven’t seen her in a while cause she went traveling.”
Hades smiled at the thought of her and then looked back at the little girl, “So what do you think little one? You like the name Tyto?”
She nodded and nuzzled into Hades shoulder, drifting off to sleep on the walk back to the gardens.
